Flying Pickets

A 1983 manufactured ‘old man band’ that had a hit over Christmas twenty-seven years ago with a cover of Yazoo’s, ‘Only You’.

They all looked rather dodgy-looking characters that wouldn’t look out of placeĀ on ‘Crimewatch’. But if they ever did find themselves placed in a Police line-up they would be identified almost immediately simply by the way they chose to dress.

One always dressed up like Tom Baker in ‘Doctor Who’, another like Gomez in the Addams Family and another like a 1950′s Elvis-type throwback. But it was the lead singer who really stood out with his ‘Romany’ ear-ring, long sideburns and bankrobber’s donkey jacket.

With all this going on, it all had the look of a ‘Public Bar’ singalong about it and I always imagined the song ending with a punch-up in the car park outside. A feeling not helped by the shooting of their pop video in an actual rough-looking pub, complete with beer-soaked dartboard.

As I expected, it was a one-hit wonder and I’m equally sure that they now entertain their fellow residents in the ‘old folks home’ with stories of when they appeared on Top Of The Pops and were at ‘Number 1′ at Christmas nearly three decades ago.

'Please move along the line, Sir, and if you recognise the man who robbed the bank, please place your hand on his shoulder.'
